European Researchers’ Night 2021: Palermo

Internet of Lights

The increasingly widespread diffusion of LED lighting systems offers the opportunity to integrate lighting systems and high-speed network connectivity infrastructures.

As part of the H2020 Marie Curie Sklodoswka ENLIGHT’EM project, the University of Palermo participates, among other things, with the development and fine-tuning of embedded systems that integrate communication techniques with visible light and radio transmission technologies. The latter compensate for the problems exhibited by VLC systems when used in scenarios where communication with visible light can be impervious due to mobility or the presence of obstacles.

The intervention presents:

– an introduction to communication techniques based on visible light modulation (VLC)

– an overview of the possible applications and related problems to be addressed in the implementation of this new technology

– an experimental demonstration of how to transmit data using what apparently are “simple” lamps.
